Robert G. Edwards

Robert G. Edwards born in Yorkshire Britain, but raised in Manchester. He joined and served in the army from 1944 through 1948 when he joined Universaty of wales in 1957, going on to studying animal genetics at Edinburgh Universaty. At first Edwards was studying artificial fertilization with rat specimines. However the procedure was already perfected so Edwards moved on to his dream, to allow infertile couples have children. For years Edwards studied ran into a problem, before him we knew very little about the human reproductive system. So as Edwards runs studies on the human vitro fertilisation he also discovered most of what we know about our reproductive systems.
Now what is vitro fertilisation exactally you might ask. Well since I did study the man I had to also find out what the heck he actually did. vitro fertilisation or IVF for short is the prossess of fertilizing an egg outside a womb then implanting the fertile egg into a womb. Now I’m sure you can see how IVF has been met by resistance from many people on the terms of “ethics”, however Edwards did not let his dream go an persisted through the resistance and in doing so actually developed and birthed the first test tube baby in 1977. Louise Brown and her husband were the first succsess to IVF when her egg was fertilized and his sperm was used to be implanted back into her womb and birthed Louise Joy Brown. Since then Irish times reported “since some four million babies worldwide have been born as a result of the treatment”, showing an awesome success rate.
Edwards, I’m not pleased to report, is not doing well. He is so sick he was not able to acknowlege he’s won his Nobel prize in medicine. On a better note his work is being continued with several teams on doctors determined to take Edward’s work beyond what even Edwards could have dreamed of doing, for example a team wants to do IVF WITHOUT implanting the egg back into a womb by means of an artificial womb that has shown some promise.
